Leenane Village
Leenane (meaning ‘where the tide fills’) is a village and 1,845-acre townland in County Galway, Ireland. It is on the shore of Killary arbour (one of only three Fjords in Ireland), on the Northern edge of Connemara, and is on the route of the Western Way long-distance trail. The village is at the junction of the N59 and R336 roads in a valley between the mountains of Munterowen West and Devils Mother, with a direct view of Ben Gorm Mountain to the North, across the Fjord.
Leenane was the setting for the film The Field and of Martin McDonagh’s plays the The Beauty Queen of Leenane and The Lonesome West.
The village is a quarter mile away from the Leenane Hotel. You can find there two local Pubs – Hamilton’s and Gaynor’s, Leenane Sheep & Wool Museum, The Purple Door Café and the Forge Craft Shop.
Hamilton’s Pub also has a grocery shop.
Gaynor’s Bar is famous for the fact that a lot of the pub scenes from the film ‘The Field’ were shot in this bar.
The Sheep and Wool Museum offers an insight into the importance of sheep and wool in Connemara’s past. You can learn the history of sheep farming, local woollen industry and the process of how sheep’s fleece is made into cloth through technology, displays and demonstrations.
The Craft Shop located in the heart of the village has reasonably priced pottery and jewellery all being handmade in Ireland.
The Purple Door Café is in the village and the serve coffee, homemade cakes, soups or crepes.
The Catholic Church is within walking distance of the village on the Westport Road – N59. Mass on Sundays is at 11.30 am.
Nearest towns to Leenane are – Westport (20 miles North N59) and Clifden (also 20 miles away but South N59).
